Wardrobes in older houses often need to work around a chimney breast

The presence of a chimney breast in a room means alcoves on either side are formed. Sometimes these alcoves can be used to fit shelves but if the chimney breast is not very deep then that’s not a lot of storage potential. Here we build a generous sized wardrobe around the chimney breast.

Note: the newspaper taped around the floor is to stop draughts blowing dust.

TIP: the shallow wardrobe needs to cover the chimney breast but it is safer to make it wider rather than too exact. For example if the chimney breast is 500mm wide then making the shallow cabinet 600mm wide will allow fitting tolerance.
