Concealed 3D hinge for internal house doors
Concealed 3D hinges are more feature packed and user friendly for internal house door use
For cabinetry we favour the Blum style overlay concealed hinge but for household doors which are usually 35mm thick this crosses over into “architectural ironmongery” and here the standard is the butt hinge.
The butt hinge shown above is good quality with ball bearing moving parts but fitting a part like this requires skill and is the job of the onsite carpenter. It’s what carpenters go to college for. Of course anyone with determination can fit a butt hinge but there is a good chance the results will be less good than that of a time served carpenter. The “problems” with a butt hinge are:
- when the butt hinge is positioned it can’t be moved
- the butt hinge needs to sit in a mortice/rebate. This needs to be machined accurately for the door to work well
These things are fixable (shims etc) but when it starts to go wrong it takes a great deal of time to correct and perhaps the end result will never be as good as the time served carpenter who can get it right first time and complete the door hanging job in 40 minutes.
